Eco-Responsibility Program

The Eco-Responsibility Initiative Of The Aerospace Sector

A structured program to position your company as a responsible player in a context of industry transformation.

They Took Part In The Program

Why This Program?

The program was born out of a desire to transform the aerospace sector in a complex and rapidly changing environment.

Discover the latest study presented by Aéro Montréal and conducted by Deloitte, Prepare Your Business for the ESG Shift, a guide designed for SMEs in the Quebec aerospace industry.

There is an ecological emergency

Human activities have caused irreparable damage to our planet. Six of the nine planetary boundaries have been exceeded. We are therefore collectively facing a climate emergency.

The aerospace sector was responsible for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions in 2018. This proportion is expected to increase if nothing is done to limit it.

However, the IPCC's scientific consensus highlights the need for a global reduction of GHG emissions by half by 2030 to limit the increase in average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Major challenges are therefore to be expected for the gradual decarbonation of sector activities and participation in the achievement of IPCC targets.

There is a demand from different stakeholders

The pressures pushing companies in the sector to adopt eco-responsible practices are becoming increasingly numerous, diverse, and frequent.

The clients (OEMs) are mobilizing towards greater eco-responsibility. A growing number are using the EcoVadis platform, which evaluates the social and environmental strategies of suppliers.

Consumers expectations are intensifying with the rise of 'flight shaming' and the criticism of greenwashing initiatives.

In a context of labor shortages, companies' eco-responsible commitments attract employees.

The majority of investors now require ESG performances (Desjardins, CDPQ, BNC, FTQ).

There are regulatory pressures

The adoption of standards for global GSS accountability (SRSRD, ISB SSRI) increases the degree of transparency throughout the value chain, as well as the need for concrete strategies and actions.

In addition, the duty of vigilance is tightening and becoming enforceable for large corporations following the adoption, in 2024 of Bill S-21 on modern slavery in Canada or the CSDDD in the European Union.

Even though these new regulations do not directly affect SMEs, they should expect a radical transformation in the requirements of large companies towards them.

What Is The Program About?

The Eco-Responsibility initiative aims to equip SMEs in the Quebec aerospace sector to address socio-environmental challenges, decarbonize their operations, and adopt best practices to meet the social and environmental criteria required by clients and OEMs.

The support, provided by an expert firm, is carried out in three phases and aims to raise awareness, assist in taking action, and strengthen motivation to act. The methodology is structured and accessible to engage all participants, regardless of their current level of maturity.

1. ESG Diagnosis

The first phase aims to provide a complete diagnosis of the maturity of the company on social, economic, governance and environmental issues. The company is evaluated on a wide range of sustainable development issues (18 to 23) such as working conditions, business ethics, energy management, biodiversity protection, etc.

Certain key topics are then explored in more depth, leading to additional analyses:

  • A review and analysis of Scope 1 and 2* GHG emissions
  • A review and analysis of waste materials
  • A mapping of supply chain risks
  • A graphical representation of the value chain

*Scope 1 and 2 emissions relate to direct emissions from the company's activities and energy purchases such as electricity. Scope 3 is discussed during the initiative, but its inventory is not conducted during the support process.

2. Sustainable Planning

The second phase begins with a foresight exercise that outlines various potential scenarios for the sector in the medium and long term. This exercise helps to collaboratively identify different possible areas for improvement.

This then leads to the development of a structured and phased sustainability action plan spanning several years.

This roadmap helps mobilize the company around concrete actions. On average, 60 action levers are identified per company.

Examples of identity actions:

  • Electrify the vehicle fleet at the end of its life, with the potential to reduce emissions by 19% in scopes 1 and 2.
  • Conduct a feasibility study for the electrification of building heating, with a potential reduction of 60% in greenhouse gas emissions for scopes 1 and 2.
3. Structuring Sustainable Development Governance

At the beginning of the program, an internal eco-responsibility committee is established.

The committee is proactive throughout the support process to co-develop the action plan.

Before concluding the support, the experts provide the company with the tools to structure a sustainability governance framework.
